FAQs
Come rain or shine, there’s plenty to do in Edinburgh. In the sun, explore the iconic Edinburgh Castle, hike up Arthur’s Seat, or simply bask in the rays at Princes Street Gardens. In the rain, head underground to Edinburgh Dungeons or visit some of the world-famous museums and art galleries in the city.
And of course, going to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is a must if you live in the city. The world-famous event attracts the very best comedians – you’re guaranteed to be laughing out of your seat.
Edinburgh has loads of free attractions that allow you to have a fun day out, even on a tight budget. Simply walking around the city is an attraction – you could walk around all day admiring the beautiful architecture and cobblestoned streets.
However, we recommend that the first place you walk is the Royal Mile – a long road that used to be the designated walkway for Kings and Queens. From there, visit The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, The Royal Botanical Gardens, and St Giles Cathedral, all for free.
The city of Edinburgh is beautiful, especially since it’s surrounded by breath-taking nature and outdoor space. From the city centre, hike up Arthur’s Seat and get a panoramic view of the city. It takes about two hours to get to the top, but it’s worth it.
Further afield, you can get to Pentland Hills – a vast landscape with plenty of walking routes for different abilities. If you’re looking for a relaxing place to sit and study, however, all you need to do is head to the city centre and go to The Meadows.
As Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh has some of the best food and drink spots in Scotland. When it comes to eating, taste the ultimate British comfort food at Makar’s Gourmet Mash Bar, or get a health kick from Seeds for the Soul. For casual nights out, go to Foundry 39 for cocktails with sourdough pizzas and burgers. One place in Edinburgh that is essential, however, is Mary’s Milk Bar. This place is famous for its incredible ice cream with adventurous flavours. It attracts queues out the door, even in the winter.
Edinburgh’s architecture tells a story of a historical city moving with the times. The Old Town was founded in the 12th century – walking through the streets you can feel its medieval history – dark, Gothic buildings with complex stonework are at every corner. However, in the new town, you get a taste of the modern, even though buildings in this area date back to the 1700s. The New Town was built because the Old Town was full – so was used to house wealthy businessmen. The area is now full of all of your favourite high-street shops, along with endless choice of bars and restaurants.
Living in Edinburgh gives you the benefit of living in the city, as well as near mountains and coast. Travel less than 30 minutes on public transport and you’ll be at Newhaven Harbour, or Silverknowes Beach.
When you book a student room at Vita Student, you can enjoy early access to all your new building’s communal spaces before you move in. Discover your new study spot and save on your gym membership by securing your space today.
